MUS: A Century of Excellence in Medical Education and Research
The Medical University of Sofia (MUS) is Bulgaria’s oldest and most prestigious institution for higher medical education. It was founded in 1917 as a medical faculty of Sofia. Since then, it has become a modern and innovative university with four faculties, three colleges, and 14 university hospitals.
The history of MUS is closely linked to the development of medicine and healthcare in Bulgaria. Many eminent scientists, doctors, and educators have contributed to its academic excellence and reputation. Some of them are Prof. Stamen Grigorov, who discovered Lactobacillus bulgaricus; Prof. Assen Zlatarov, who synthesized penicillin; Prof. Vasil Mollov, who performed the first kidney transplant in Bulgaria; and Prof. Todor Kableshkov, who established the first department of neurology in Bulgaria.

The faculties of MUS are:
• Faculty of Medicine: It trains specialists in general medicine, nursing care, midwifery care, and medical laboratory assistants. It has 29 departments covering all fields of basic and clinical medicine.
• Faculty of Dental Medicine: It trains dental medicine specialists, technicians, and hygienists. It has 12 departments covering all fields of dentistry, such as oral surgery, orthodontics, periodontology, and implantology.
• Faculty of Pharmacy: It trains pharmacy, pharmaceutical management, and pharmaceutical technology specialists. It has ten departments covering all fields of pharmacy, such as pharmacology, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacognosy, and biotechnology.
• Faculty of Public Health: It trains specialists in public health management, healthcare management, social activities, rehabilitation therapy, and health inspection. It has 11 departments covering all fields of public health, such as epidemiology, health economics, health psychology, and social medicine.
MUS is a leading research center in various biomedical science and clinical practice fields. MUS has 57 accredited Ph.D. programs and 52 medical specialties for postgraduate education and participates in numerous national and international research projects and networks. It has modern facilities and equipment for conducting cutting-edge research and providing high-quality healthcare services.
MUS is also committed to internationalization and academic mobility. MUS has partnered with over 100 universities and organizations from Europe, Asia, America, and Africa. In addition, MUS offers opportunities for students and staff to study or work abroad through various programs such as Erasmus+, CEEPUS, DAAD, Fulbright, etc. MUS also welcomes international students who wish to pursue medical education at MUS.
