The Technical University Gheorghe Asachi of Iasi (TUIASI) is a public university in Iasi, Romania. It is one of Romania’s oldest and most prestigious universities, with a long tradition of excellence in engineering education and research. It is named after Gheorghe Asachi, a scholar and engineer who founded the first Romanian language higher education courses in 1813.
The history of TUIASI dates back to 1910 when the School of Industrial Electricity was established within the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Iasi. In 1912, other technical departments were added, forming the Polytechnic School of Iasi. In 1937, the Polytechnic School was reorganized as an independent institution with four faculties: Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Chemical Engineering. In 1948, it was renamed the Gheorghe Asachi Polytechnic Institute.
Over time, TUIASI expanded its academic offer and research activities by creating new faculties and departments in various engineering and applied sciences fields. Currently, TUIASI has 11 faculties: Automatic Control and Computer Engineering; Chemical Engineering; Civil Engineering and Building Services; Electrical Engineering; Electronics Telecommunications and Information Technology; Hydrotechnical Engineering Geodesy and Environmental Engineering; Machine Manufacturing and Industrial Management; Materials Science and Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; Textile Leather Goods Designing Technology; Architecture.

TUIASI offers bachelor’s degrees (4 years), master’s degrees (2 years), and doctoral degrees (3-6 years) in more than 100 study programs covering a wide range of engineering disciplines. Some of these programs are taught in English or French languages. TUIASI also offers postgraduate courses for lifelong learning and professional development.

The Ministry of Education classifies TUIASI as an advanced research and education university. It has more than 630 academic staff members who conduct high-quality research in various fields of engineering sciences. TUIASI has over 40 research centers and laboratories with modern facilities and equipment. TUIASI participates in numerous national and international research projects funded by various sources, such as European Union programs (Horizon Europe), Romanian National Authority for Scientific Research (ANCS), industry partners, and private foundations.
TUIASI is a member of several academic networks and associations such as CESAER (Conference of European Schools for Advanced Engineering Education and Research), EUA (European University Association), AUF (Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie), ARUT (Romanian Alliance of Technical Universities) or EUCEN (European University Continuing Education Network).
TUIASI has established 690 partnerships with universities in over 70 countries worldwide for student exchange programs, joint degrees, or collaborative research activities. It also provides its students with a stimulating learning environment fostering creativity, innovation, and excellence.
TUIASI has close to 14,000 students enrolled in its study programs, including over 1,000 international students. It offers them various personal and professional growth opportunities such as scholarships, internships, competitions, cultural events, or sports activities.
The campus also hosts several student organizations that organize social events, volunteering activities, and cultural festivals.
